First May days are bringing summer airs and cheerful outcomes for the Britain’s favorite department store.

As John Lewis head of operational support, Chris Hooper, has recently unveiled, strong menswear sales and good weather, which prompted demand for items such as sunglasses and summer footwear brand FitFlops, helped lift fashion turnover by 25% in the week to May 1.

The retailer said that a quarter of its shops beat last year’s performance and 13 were ahead of the 2008 comparison. The Bluewater store turned in the best performance with a sales rise of 32%, and online sales at johnlewis.com were up 35%.

Fashion outperformed other divisions such as home goods, which rose 18%, and electricals and home technology, which notched up a “less noticeable” improvement, according to John Lewis board of directors.
